DESCRIPTION:Tire Amnesty – What’s it Worth? \nOld tires have a way of piling up – behind sheds\, along tree lines\, and tucked into corners of garages. With the upcoming tire amnesty\, the North Central Nebraska RC&D is inviting participants to take a fresh look at those piles of tires and ask a simple question – what’s it worth to clear them out the right way? The upcoming amnesty is designed to make scrap tire disposal easier\, more affordable\, and environmentally responsible. \nThe RC&D is encouraging participants to think about the value\, and then by supporting the effort itself. Discarding old tires can often come with unexpected costs. Retailers charge per tire for disposal\, and those fees can quickly add up. While the tire amnesty is free\, participants are encouraged to consider making a voluntary donation when they drop off their tires. Instead of spending money to clear out unwanted tires\, participants can redirect those savings towards something more meaningful\, making a donation to the RC&D. \n“People are often surprised by how much it costs to dispose of tires the traditional way\,” said Mike Burge\, RC&D Chairman. “This event not only removes that burden\, but gives people the chance to turn those savings into something positive for our communities.” \nAll contributions to the North Central RC&D help support this event\, fund local cleanup projects\, and expand community programs that benefit everyone. \nThe environmental benefits of scrap tire collections are significant as well. Since 1998\, Nebraska has had a statewide landfill ban on tires. Illegally burning tires releases toxic smoke\, and stock piling tires create breeding grounds for mosquitoes and varmints. In contrast\, all tires collected will be recycled and repurposed into items like park benches\, silage covers\, and feed bunks. \nThe tire amnesty will be held in Springview\, Nebraska\, on April 28th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and on April 29th from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The collection site will be at the Old Airport\, 101 Airport Road\, and will accept up to 400 tons. The RC&D is working together with Keya Paha County and Nebraska Department of Water\, Energy\, and Environment. \nTires will only be accepted on the scheduled days\, and once the tonnage is met\, the collection will close. The event can not accept more tonnage than granted\, so it is important to know the weight of loads. For 20 or fewer tires\, a count by tire type is needed. Loads with over 20 tires will require weights. A scale is available at the Springview location. All sizes of car\, truck\, pivot\, semi\, and tractor tires can be brought to the amnesty. No rims will be taken\, and there will not be assistance in unloading tires. Any tires with excessive dirt or debris will be turned away. Residents of the RC&D area\, which includes the counties of Boyd\, Brown\, Cherry\, Holt\, Keya Paha\, and Rock\, are encouraged to participate. Tire retailers\, as well as residents of South Dakota\, are not eligible to bring tires. \nWhether it’s a single tire or a full load\, each one brought in represents a choice – to improve the environment and contribute to something larger. DESCRIPTION:The Upper Elkhorn NRD will be taking requests for the transfer of groundwater irrigated acres from November 1\, 2025 through March 1\, 2026.  Due to changes in the UENRD GWMP Rules and Regulations\, there is now a $50 application fee for landowners who would like to make an appointment and review a possible transfer.  The Upper Elkhorn NRD Board of Directors have adopted changes to the Transfer program over the last couple of years pertaining to the Transfer Agreement and added an application fee.  The Transfer Agreement\, transfer procedures and support information can be found on the UENRD website at www.uenrd.org.  We are encouraging anyone interested in signing up for a Transfer to go through the information on the website first before making an appointment.    If you have questions\, please feel free to contact the office at 402-336-3867.

DESCRIPTION:Order Your Conservation Seedlings for Spring Planting!!! \nPlace Orders Now!  As the demand for conservation tree seedlings grows\, the Upper Elkhorn NRD will be taking orders from now until March 1st. Trees are available on a first come first serve basis and are available in a variety of species consisting of conifers\, broadleaves and shrubs. Hand plant trees should be ordered in bundles of 25 while machine plant orders will be based on the windbreak design. The NRD can provide technical assistance to cooperators who would like help designing a new windbreak or renovating an old one. The technician will suggest the type of trees best suited for your soil type and design a layout beneficial to your area.  The NRD also offers conservation weed mulch to help promote the survival of new seedlings.  Conservation weed mulch is installed over the seedlings to help control weeds and retain moisture. This practice can be very beneficial to young windbreaks and should be considered when placing your order.  Trees and mulch purchased from the Upper Elkhorn NRD may be eligible for local or state cost share funds.  For more information or to place an order\, contact your local NRCS office\, the Upper Elkhorn NRD at 301 N. Anyone wishing to run fertilizer/chemicals through their center pivot irrigation system will need to submit an application for chemigation to the Natural Resources District.  Renewal applications will cost $30; New applications will cost $100 per site and must be approved by NRD personnel before any chemigation activity; and\, Emergency applications will cost $250.  Chemigation forms are available at the Upper Elkhorn NRD office and NRCS Office in Neligh or online at www.uenrd.org.  Online forms may be filled out online\, printed and returned to the NRD office with the appropriate fee.  Remember\, it is the responsibility of each chemigator to maintain and permit each chemigation site on an annual basis.  For further information or questions\, please contact the Upper Elkhorn NRD\, (402) 336-3867.

DESCRIPTION:ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS!!!! \nUpper Elkhorn NRD Senior Scholarships Available \nThe Upper Elkhorn Natural Resources District is offering three $500 scholarships to graduating High School Seniors from the District.  These scholarships are available for students who are planning to further their education in a field related to natural resources or agriculture.  Seniors who are interested should contact their guidance counselor or the Upper Elkhorn NRD office in O’Neill for further information\, eligibility requirements and applications.  Scholarship information has been sent to all District schools and is also available at the Upper Elkhorn NRD website at www.uenrd.org/education.html.  The deadline for all scholarship applications is April 5\, 2023.
